The Company - History and Present
Meganet Communications (TCIx, Inc.) is a leading network services firm that provides Internet connectivity and private WAN services to corporations, wholesale markets, and ISPs throughout New England, New York and Connecticut. Founded March of 1996 in Fall River Massachusetts, as a residential Internet service provider, the company has grown into the largest privately held Commercial Network Service Provider in New England.
In January of 1998, MegaNet completed construction of a multi-homed, fault-tolerant network that allowed the company to service all of Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Southern New Hampshire, with an emphasis on commercial connectivity.
In July of 1998 Meganet acquired Global Communications, a Lowell-based ISP and smoothly transitioned Global's residential and commercial clients onto the Meganet network. Three month's later the company purchased the residential and commercial access customer base of Hey Communications in Sturbridge Massachusetts.
In August of 2000 Meganet completed construction on a secure collocation facility in Providence RI. This facility offers server and light telco collocation, as well as serving as the company's backup Network Operations Center. Clients leasing rack space enjoy cost-effective high-speed Internet connectivity via Meganet's state of the art fully redundant fiber-optic backbone network. Easy fiber access is also available to other networks in the same complex including Verizon (formerly Bell Atlantic), AT&T, Global NAPS and Level3 Communications.
In September 2000, Verizon pulled fiber optic cable in Meganet's Fall River headquarters. This location was the last of five main POPs be upgraded to high capacity fiber and provided much needed capacity to support future growth. The company currently maintains points of presence (POPs) at The Boston MXP, Quincy MA, Fall River MA, Hartford CT, and 2 locations in Providence RI. The existing fiber network has the capability to support substantial growth and future expansion.
In April 2007, looking to better service customers and enhance network offerings, MegaNet merged with Cape.com to provide one of the largest privately owned Internet and data networks in the Northeastern United States.
To date, MegaNet has deployed carrier grade Lucent Frame Relay/ATM switching devices to all POPs. This deployment allows the company to deliver private Frame Relay network connections to businesses with multiple locations within MegaNet's multi state coverage area. The most recent expansion, completed in March of 2002, was an ATM switch deployment in Hartford CT. Future deployments are planned for New York City and Washington D.C.
