T1/T3 & Leased Lines
MegaT1/T3 & Leased Lines
Leased lines are commonly referred to as Frame Relay, DDS, T1, DS1, T3, or DS3
The term ‘leased line’ refers to Meganet’s premier product offering. While the wide range of dedicated and dialup access products now offered are an integral part of our product mix, our core network, was designed for leased line service. In order to successfully deploy leased line services and maintain the highest levels of performance and reliability a network must be engineered from the ground up, and must include redundancy and scalability as the primary design goals. These design goals were met at the implementation of our first major build out (January 1998) and continue to be the fundamental design factors in our current build out, initiated November 1999. The core network has undergone two major capacity upgrades since 1999 including a recently completed expansion into Hartford Connecticut.

Application Overview
Leased lines are intended for use in 'mission critical' applications. If your organization cannot be without access for even a short amount of time, your needs are considered to be mission critical. Some examples of mission critical situations are, 1. Hosting a server that is either publicly or privately accessed over the Internet by different branches of your organization. 2. Using a dedicated circuit to connect two distinct office networks over the Internet with VPN (virtual private network) technology. 3. A large enough volume of data is transmitted that lower speed services result in delays. These are situations that, in most cases, require leased line connectivity. A full T1 circuit provides 1.5 Megabits/sec of bi-directional bandwidth. Meganet offers fractional bandwidth over T1 in increments of 128 Kilobits/sec (minimum speed of 256 Kilobits/sec) this enables your company to scale your bandwidth as needed and saves money. A T1 line is provisioned from your location through the local phone company to one of Meganet's aggregation points. The best way to conceptualize T1 bandwidth service is to think of the circuit like a water pipe. Meganet controls the flow that determines the amount of data that can flow through the pipe. Meganet provides statistical usage reports, to illustrate the amount of bandwidth utilized. If more bandwidth is required, Meganet can increase bandwidth as necessary, usually within a matter of hours.
Technical Overview
A leased line is made up of two distinct elements. The first component is the actual circuit over which the network protocol is carried. This circuit is provided by the telephone company, and is commonly referred to as the 'telco' portion. Depending on the type of service you need, the telco portion of a leased line can be provided by any number of telephone companies.
The second portion of a leased line is the bandwidth port. In the simplest terms this is the speed at which you connect your telco circuit to your ISP. Bandwidth port rates can be fixed or variable (burstable) speed, and are easily upgradeable to the maximum speed of your telco circuit. A T1 line, for example, is a digitally conditioned four wire full duplex circuit. A T1 utilizes time-division multiplexing to aggregate the twenty-four 64 Kbps channels to create the capacity of 1.544 Mbps. A T3 circuit is made up of 28 T1 circuits with 672 64 Kbps channels. As with a T1, Meganet can offer fractional bandwidth over a T3 circuit starting at a minimum of 3 Mbps.
